Development of Bansko
In the 1980´s Bankso was a one-ski lift resort; today, after a sweeping modernization plan, it has a total of 14 lifts and modern facilities and superb infrastructure, successfully transforming itself into the booming ski capital of Eastern Europe.
A number of factors have contributed to this; its recent participation in the bid to host 2014 Winter Olympics although rejected resulted in substantial investment in the resorts facilities and infrastructure, whilst also generating high profile media coverage in UK and Ireland.
Aside from its standing as an excellent ski destination, Bansko has emerged as a popular summer mountain resort. Outdoor pursuits such as mountain climbing, hiking, walking and horse riding all take place amidst the beautiful alpine scenery of the Pirin Mountains.
Demand for property among investors has steadily grown, with prices increasing exponentially. Investment so far has been sufficient enough to warrant the construction of an Ian Woosnam designed golf course and the opening of the five star, Grand Arena Hotel, which is managed by the German Kempinski group.
Infrastructural improvements are ongoing, with the construction of a new highway from Sofia to Kulata (a town close to Bansko on the Greek border) due for completion in 2008, meaning transfer time from Sofia to the resort will decrease considerably. There is also a proposal in the pipeline for a new airport in the region.
All in all Bansko has the potential to become one of the great ski areas of Europe.
