Pamporovo

This increasingly popular resort is one of Bulgaria's most beautiful and, with its mild southerly location; visitors to the slopes often find that they have managed to pick up a tan, along with some improved skiing skills. The opening of the new five-star Hotel Pamporovo in the heart of the old town indicates that hoteliers are hoping to attract a wealthy clientele.

Pamporovo is located 260km from Sofia and 85km south of Bulgaria's second city of Plovdiv. Its mild temperature (due to the influence of the Mediterranean) means that there is little chance of sudden changes of weather and consequently virtually no chance of traditional hazards, such as avalanches.

Far less developed than more established resorts such as Bansko and Borovets, Pamporovo’s charm lies in its small size, friendly inhabitants and excellent ski school: there´s even a 24-hour mountain rescue service for additional peace of mind.

Pamporovo has had a long and frequently turbulent history. Centuries ago many of the area’s inhabitants took refuge in the Rhodopi Mountains to escape the Ottoman invaders. Nearby Bachkovo Monastery is one of the oldest and largest Eastern Orthodox monasteries in Eastern Europe and is a superb example of Georgian Christian architecture.

During the summer the snow melts, uncovering a landscape perfect for climbing, mountain biking, horse-riding and hiking, attracting holidaymakers who prefer to take their summer holidays away from the bustle of the seaside locations, making Pamporovo a resort for all seasons.

Getting There

Plovdiv airport is only one hour's drive away with ski charter flights to and from Manchester and London Gatwick. The busier and more central airport at Sofia is 220kms to the north, with regular flights operating to and from most British airports.
